Simon Nicol rejoins the group and Fairport resume their adventure with an appreciable album which contains a ballad about the Napoleonic era which gives the album its title and inspires an evocative cover. The memory goes to the French army defeated by "General Winter". The interior is also graphically refined, with photographs of the four musicians (Nicol, Swarbrick, Pegg and Rowlands) superimposed on a French flag. The album inaugurates a new contract with the Vertigo label.
