I Chieftains si riuniscono per la prima volta nel 1962 a casa di Paddy Moloney, che al tempo faceva parte della Seàan O'Riada's folk orchestra. Il disco esce per la Claddagh nel 1964 con una copertina disegnata per la prima volta da Edward Delaney. A differenza dell'immagine di cui sopra (si tratta della copertina proposta dalla Shanachie) la copertina originale comprendeva una banda nera in basso con la scritta "The Chieftains" in colore arancione. La registrazione è stata effettuata da Morgan O'Sullivan ai Peter Hunt Studios di Dublino.
