An hour with Cecil Sharp:
this is the imaginary meeting between Ashley and this famous
ethnomusicologist, who lived towards the end of the nineteenth century.
Sharp arrives with his trusty bicycle and brings with him some metal
cylinders; they were the tape recorders of the time: on them Sharp has
imprinted sounds and voices from over a hundred years ago. Listening to
them today, they obviously have a strong background noise: who knows
if, when new, they were much better! In any case, Ashley, with the
collaboration of Martin Carthy and Richard Thompson, proposes some of
those songs, which thus acquire new life. In particular, the version of
"Turtle Dove" is sensational. The cover and the photographs are by
Garry Owen.
Un'ora insieme a Cecil Sharp:
si tratta dell'incontro immaginario tra Ashley e questo famoso
etnomusicologo, vissuto verso la fine dell'ottocento. Sharp arriva con
la sua fedele bicicletta e porta con sé dei cilindri di
metallo; erano i registratori dell'epoca: su di essi Sharp ha impresso
sonorità e voci di oltre cento anni fa. Ascoltati oggi,
ovviamente denotano un forte rumore di fondo: chissà se, da
nuovi, fossero migliori di molto! In ogni caso Ashley, con la
collaborazione di Martin Carthy e Richard Thompson, ripropone alcuni di
quei brani, che acquistano così nuova vita. In particolare
è strepitosa la versione di "Turtle Dove". La copertina e le
