Dopo Shoot Out the Lights (1982) e Hand of Kindness (1983) Richard Thompson ottiene un nuovo contratto discografico con la Polydor e il suo primo album per l'etichetta è Across a Crowded Room del 1985. La polydor ha allora pensato di girare un video in occasione del concerto al Barrymore's, un club di Ottawa, in Canada, Negli Stati Uniti il ​​concerto è apparso solo su laserdisc ed è andato rapidamente fuori commercio, diventando molto richiesto tra i fan di Thompson. Nel 2019, Real Gone Music ha finalmente deciso di ripubblicare il concerto che vede Thompson e la sua band in una forma eccezionale, band di cui fanno parte Clive Gregson e Christine Collister che disegnano armonie superbe.
