"The early years" è una compilation che comprende brani del periodo 1968-1972. Venti brani in tutto, una buona raccolta dunque. Curiosa è la grafica dell'edizione "Conneisseur": la foto del gruppo, opera di una certa "Bigkick Creations", corrisponde al disegno di copertina di "A stack of Steeleye Span". All'interno una presentazione di Simon Evans illustra il primo periodo della storia della band. Il cd della Action (The best of & the rest) comprende solo i primi 14 dei brani qui riportati ed è estremamente spartano nella grafica.
