Shirley Collins, Heart's Ease, LP UK Domino Recording 2020 - WIGLP454

New and beautiful album from this artist who in her old age finds new forms of vocality thanks to the collaboration of her friend and producer Ian Kearey. The album was recorded and mixed by Al Scott at Metway Studios in Brighton. Mastering was done by Kevin Metcalfe. On the cover a portrait of the artist drawn by Alex Merry, the graphics are by Matthew Cooper while the photograph of the Lodestar Band, this is the name of the group that accompanies Shirley, was taken by Toby Amies. Interesting is the slide guitar that accompanies the interpretation of “Wonderous Love”, a nineteenth-century piece taken from the Sacred Harp repertoire, then we find “Barbara Allen”, a Scottish ballad interpreted differently from her previous recordings: here Kearey’s 12-string dobro and an unexpected hurdy-gurdy drone by Ossian Brown are at work. Listening to “Canadee-i-o,” one inevitably thinks of Nick Jones’ version (in “Penguin Eggs”) while “Sweet Greens And Blues” (lyrics by Collins’ first husband, poet and producer Austin John Marshall) strikes with its stringed instrument texture. Shirley is now 85, but her voice has an intensity that makes one not miss her youth.

Nuovo e bellissimo album di questa artista che nell'anzianità trova nuove forme di vocalità grazie alla collaborazione dell'amico e produttore Ian Kearey. Il disco è stato registrato e mixato da Al Scott negli studi Metway di Brighton. La masterizzazione è opera di Kevin Metcalfe. In copertina un ritratto dell'artista disegnato da Alex Merry, la grafica è invece è di Matthew Cooper mentre la fotografia della Lodestar Band, questo il nome del gruppo che accompagna Shirley, è stata scattata da Toby Amies. Interessante la chitarra slide che accompagna l’interpretazione di “Wonderous Love”, un pezzo ottocentesco tratto dal repertorio Sacred Harp, poi troviamo “Barbara Allen”, ballata scozzese interpretata in modo differente da sue precedenti incisioni: qui sono all’opera il dobro a 12 corde di Kearey e un inatteso bordone di ghironda di Ossian Brown. Ascoltando “Canadee-i-o”, inevitabilmente la mente va alla versione di Nick Jones (in “Penguin Eggs”) mentre “Sweet Greens And Blues” (testo del primo marito di Collins, il poeta e produttore Austin John Marshall) colpisce per la trama degli strumenti a corde. Shirley ha oggi 85 anni ma la sua voce possiede una intensità che non fa rimpiangere la sua giovinezza.
