Topette!!, Rhododendron

Topette !! is a dance-band but not only that. As you may immediately perceive, there is an energy in the way of playing that is not simply aimed at getting you up and dancing, although this remains one of the purposes. It is a different kind of push that invites you to listen and that requires an attentive ear. The band was formed in 2014 by the bassist Barnaby Stradling (of Blowzabella) in a meeting in a French pub involving Andy Cutting and the violinist James Delarre of Mawkin, plus a "French contingent" made up of Julien Cartonnet and Tania Buisse. The five musicians recorded an EP in 2015 and an album C’est Le Pompon in 2017. Rhododendron is the natural follow-up to that album. The instrumentation is not exactly the orthodox one for a dance-oriented band. In addition to a first line of accordion and violin, the sound is largely defined by the role of Julien's double instrument (tenor banjo and French bagpipes) and by the acoustic bass of Barnaby, which is really effective in its percussive charge. The last feature to note is Tania Buisse's bodhrán, which is rhythmically very interesting. Among the tracks, the composition of Barnaby Stradling (which gives title to the disc) is truly remarkable combined in a medley to Foutou by Julien Cartonnet, a three-stroke bourrée characterized by a bass-violin duet on which Julien Cartonnet's bagpipes are then wonderfully inserted. Also, not to be forgotten is the beautiful RSB / Deule Douce jig by Andy Cutting and Julien Cartonnet. The disc was produced by Joe Gracia and recorded in May 2019 at Invada studios. The mixing was performed in Joe's Garage by Joe himself and Barn Stradling, and finally the mastering was done by Nick Cooke. Interesting is the artwork by Sanna Stradling. Topette!! è una dance-band ma non solo quello. Non è solo un gruppo da ballo. Come si può percepire fin da subito c’è una energia nel modo di suonare che non è semplicemente finalizzata a farti alzare e ballare, anche se questo rimane uno degli scopi. È un tipo diverso di spinta che invita all’ascolto e che richiede un orecchio attento. La band è stata formata nel 2014 dal bassista Barnaby Stradling (dei Blowzabella) in un incontro in un bar francese che ha coinvolto Andy Cutting e il violinista Mawkin James Delarre, più un "contingente francese" composto da Julien Cartonnet e Tania Buisse. I cinque musicisti hanno registrato un EP nel 2015, poi un album C’est Le Pompon. Rhododendron è il naturale seguito di quell'album. La strumentazione non è esattamente quella ortodossa per una band orientata alla danza, dove oltre a una prima linea di fisarmonica e violino, il suono è in gran parte definito dal ruolo del doppio strumento di Julien (banjo tenore e cornamuse francesi) e dal basso acustico Barnaby, che è davvero efficace nella sua carica percussiva. L'ultima caratteristica da notare è il bodhrán di Tania Buisse, ritmicamente molto interessante. Tra le tracce è davvero apprezzabile la composizione di Stradling che da titolo al disco unita in un medley a Foutou di Julien Cartonnet, una bourrée a tre tempi caratterizzata da un duetto basso-violino sul quale poi si inserisce meravigliosamente la cornamusa di Cartonnet. Da non dimenticare inoltre la bellissima jig RSB / Deule Douce di Andy Cutting e Julien Cartonnet. Il disco è stato prodotto da Joe Gracia e registrato nel maggio del 2019 negli studi Invada; il mix è stato poi eseguito nel Joe’s Garage dallo stesso Garcia e da Barn Stradling, infine lamasterizzazione è opera di Nick Cooke.
